Cash Back vs. Travel Rewards Credit Cards
Compare cash-back and travel-rewards cards by fees, redemption flexibility, earning structure and how you actually spend.
Start with your spending, not the marketing
A rewards card is more useful when its earning structure matches purchases you already make. A high rate in a narrow category may be less valuable than a simpler rate that applies to most of your spending.
Cash back is easier to value
Cash-back rewards are generally easier to compare because the value is expressed in dollars or a direct percentage. Review redemption minimums, statement-credit rules and category caps.
Travel rewards can be more variable
Points or miles can have different values depending on how they are redeemed. Transfer partners, award availability, travel portals and program changes can affect realized value.
Annual fees change the comparison
Subtract annual fees and consider credits only if you are likely to use them naturally. A card with richer benefits is not automatically better if the fee exceeds the value you receive.
Interest can overwhelm rewards
If you routinely carry a balance, borrowing cost can be more important than rewards. Compare APR and fees first; earning a small percentage in rewards may not offset substantial interest charges.
