Step 1: Create an account
USAJOBS.gov is the official site for federal job listings. Creating an account is free. Your profile stores your resume, documents and saved searches, so you can apply to many positions without starting over.
Step 2: Search smartly
- Use keywords, job series or occupation, and location filters.
- Include remote or telework options if you want them.
- Check the filter "Who may apply" so you only see jobs open to you, such as open to the public.
- Save your searches and turn on email alerts.
Step 3: Understand the pay scale
Many federal jobs use the General Schedule (GS), which has 15 grades, and each grade has 10 steps. Pay also reflects the locality where the job is located. The announcement lists a salary range for the position. Higher grades require more experience or education. Agencies also use other pay systems, so always check the announcement.
Step 4: Build a federal-style resume
- Include start and end dates (month and year) for every role.
- List hours per week.
- Describe duties and achievements in specific terms, and mirror the language of the announcement where it truthfully applies to you.
- Be thorough. Federal resumes are often longer than private-sector ones.
Step 5: Apply and track
Follow the instructions in the announcement. You may need to complete an assessment questionnaire and upload documents such as transcripts or proof of eligibility. Apply before the closing date. Track the status in your account.
