Loan APR: How to Compare Personal and Auto Loans
Learn how APR, term, fees and monthly payment work together when comparing installment-loan offers.
APR helps standardize borrowing cost
The stated interest rate is important, but APR can provide a broader annualized measure when certain finance charges are included. For comparable loan structures, APR can make lender offers easier to evaluate side by side.
A lower payment can still cost more
Extending a loan term can reduce the required monthly payment while increasing the number of interest-bearing months. Compare both the payment and the estimated total amount repaid.
Fees change the economics
Origination fees, documentation charges and other costs can affect what you receive and what the loan costs. Review the lender’s disclosures and compare net proceeds as well as required repayment.
Shop using consistent assumptions
Use the same requested amount and similar terms when comparing quotes. For auto loans, separate the vehicle price, trade-in, down payment and financing terms so a lower monthly payment does not hide a higher purchase price or longer term.
