CD Calculator

Estimate how much a certificate of deposit could be worth at maturity and how much interest it may earn.

APY already reflects compounding over one year. Early-withdrawal penalties, taxes and institution-specific rules are not included.

How the CD calculator works

The estimate applies the entered APY over the selected portion of a year. APY is useful for comparing deposit products because it incorporates the effect of compounding into one annual figure.

What to compare before opening a CD

  • APY and how long it is guaranteed
  • Early-withdrawal penalties
  • Minimum and maximum deposit rules
  • Whether the deposit automatically renews
  • Deposit-insurance eligibility and limits

CD calculator questions

Is APY the same as the interest rate?

No. APY incorporates compounding, while a stated nominal interest rate may not.

Does this include early-withdrawal penalties?

No. Penalty terms differ by financial institution and product.

Compare certificates of deposit using APY, term and access rules

A certificate of deposit typically offers a stated term in exchange for limits on early access. The maturity value depends on deposit amount, APY, term and compounding. The highest displayed rate is not always best if the term conflicts with when the money will be needed.

How to use this page

The calculator grows the deposit for the selected term using the entered rate assumptions. It does not automatically value an early-withdrawal penalty unless that penalty is entered or separately modeled.

Practical exampleCompare a 12-month and 24-month CD while considering whether rates may change and whether funds must remain available. A slightly higher APY may not compensate for an unsuitable lockup period.

Inputs to verify

  • Read the early-withdrawal penalty and renewal policy.
  • Confirm whether interest is paid out or compounded.
  • Note the grace period and what happens automatically at maturity.

Common questions

Is a CD return guaranteed?

The stated terms are generally fixed when held as agreed, subject to the institution and product conditions.

Should I create a CD ladder?

Staggered maturities can improve access, but the appropriate structure depends on cash needs and available rates.
