Calculator methodology and source standards

Reviewed October 5, 2026 by RVR — Founder & Editor, IQlator. IQlator is built to help people explore financial and mathematical scenarios. The calculators are educational tools, not lender quotes, investment forecasts, tax advice or personalized financial advice.

Our standard: show the important inputs, state material exclusions, use established formulas, and make assumptions visible so a user can change them rather than hiding them behind a prediction.

How core calculators work

CalculatorMethodImportant limitations
MortgageFixed-rate amortization from principal, periodic rate and number of payments; entered taxes, insurance and HOA are added to the monthly estimate. Not a Loan Estimate. Mortgage insurance, closing costs, maintenance and changing escrow amounts may require separate consideration.
Auto loanAmount financed is derived from entered purchase components; fixed-payment amortization estimates payment and interest.Dealer fees, taxes, rebates and financing rules vary by location and transaction.
Personal loanStandard fixed-payment amortization using amount, APR and term.Origination fees, variable rates, prepayment rules and lender-specific APR calculations may change actual cost.
Compound interestFuture-value math using the entered rate, compounding interval, time and recurring contributions.A constant rate is a scenario, not a forecast.
Investment growthScenario-based compounding of starting balance and contributions using the user's assumed return.Does not predict markets or guarantee returns; taxes, fees and volatility can materially change outcomes.
RetirementAccumulation model for current savings and contributions, with an adjustable planning withdrawal rate.Social Security, pensions, taxes, inflation, health costs and sequence risk require separate evaluation unless explicitly modeled.

Rates and market information

When IQlator displays current rates, prices or market information, treat them as informational snapshots. Timing, provider methodology and market delays can differ. A displayed benchmark should not be treated as an offer available to a specific user. For an important decision, verify the current figure with the relevant lender, institution, exchange or official source.

Editorial review and corrections

Calculator guidance is reviewed for clarity, material assumptions and consistency with the implemented calculation. We avoid publishing pages solely to capture search terms. When a material formula or assumption changes, the affected calculator and its explanation should be reviewed together. See the Editorial Policy.

Independent verification

For U.S. consumer borrowing, users can compare lender disclosures with resources from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Investment and retirement decisions may also warrant reviewing investor education from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and tax information from the IRS. IQlator is not affiliated with those agencies.

If you find a calculation or explanation that appears incorrect, please contact IQlator with the calculator name, inputs and result so it can be reviewed.
