Calculate sales tax while recognizing local rules
Sales tax is generally calculated by multiplying the taxable price by the applicable rate. The correct rate and taxable base depend on jurisdiction, product, service, exemptions and sourcing rules. A calculator can verify arithmetic but cannot determine legal tax treatment from price alone.
How to use this page
Convert the percentage rate to a decimal, multiply by the taxable amount, and add the result to obtain the total. To reverse a tax-inclusive total, divide by one plus the tax rate before calculating the tax component.
Practical exampleAt a 6% rate, tax on a $100 taxable purchase is $6 and the total is $106. If delivery or fees are taxable locally, include them in the taxable base.
Inputs to verify
- Confirm state, county, city and special-district rates.
- Check whether the item or buyer qualifies for an exemption.
- Use the transaction date because rates and rules can change.
Common questions
Can this calculator find my exact local rate?
Only when a reliable location-specific source is connected. Otherwise enter the official combined rate.
Why does a receipt differ by a cent?
Retail systems may round per item or on the final taxable subtotal.
