Understand percentage calculations
Use the percentage calculator for common questions such as finding a percent of a number, measuring percentage change, or determining what percent one value is of another.
Find a percentage of a number
To find 20% of 150, convert 20% to 0.20 and multiply by 150. The result is 30. This pattern is useful for discounts, tips, taxes and many everyday calculations.
Find what percent one value is of another
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 is 75% because 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75.
Calculate percentage change
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide the difference by the original value, and multiply by 100. A positive result indicates an increase; a negative result indicates a decrease.
Percentage change example
If a price rises from $80 to $100, the increase is $20. Dividing $20 by the original $80 gives 0.25, so the percentage increase is 25%.
Percentage change uses the original value as the denominator, which is why a 25% increase followed by a 25% decrease does not return to the starting value.
Percentage calculator FAQ
How do I convert a percentage to a decimal?
Divide the percentage by 100. For example, 7.5% becomes 0.075.
How do I add a percentage to a number?
Multiply the number by 1 plus the percentage expressed as a decimal. Increasing 200 by 10% is 200 × 1.10 = 220.
How do I subtract a percentage from a number?
Multiply the number by 1 minus the percentage expressed as a decimal. Reducing 200 by 10% is 200 × 0.90 = 180.
